Hôtel Caron de Beaumarchais

Really, I dare you to find a boutique hotel in Paris more charming than Hôtel Caron de Beaumarchais. After adding this place to my list of hotel crushes, I was delighted to stay for a few nights last fall, and thrilled to realize we had a top-floor gable room with a balcony. The rooftop view would be reason enough to stay here, but this hotel has plenty more to offer.

Situated in the heart of Le Marais, you're centrally located but a bit removed from the main bustle of the Right Bank. Walking down lively Rue Vieille du Temple, you can't miss the pretty blue façade of Hôtel Caron de Beaumarchais among the many shades of Parisian grey. It's a perfect spot for exploring the shops and cafés of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements - and the rest of Paris, too.

Inside, the hotel is decorated in 18th century style in honor of its namesake Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, who famously wrote the play The Marriage of Figaro. There are chintz curtains and silk wallpaper, antique Louis XVI-style furniture and even a harp in the lobby. The rooms themselves are small of course, but thoughtfully put together and very well-appointed.

When you arrive, you'll be welcomed by some of the wonderful staff - just the beginning of their kind and helpful service during your stay. For a hotel with such excellent service, style, and location, the prices are very reasonable: rates vary from €130 to €250 per night depending on the room and the time of year you visit.

My favorite things about staying at Hôtel Caron de Beaumarchais are the incredible views and the generous €13 breakfast spread - two amenities that are best enjoyed together. If you reserve a room with a balcony, take your breakfast outside for a pretty perfect Parisian morning.

From the top-floor rooms, the views over Paris look like something you would see in a fairytale dreamed up by Disney - or at least Instagram. Directly in front of you are the rooftops of Le Marais, blue-grey and shingled, topped with rows of terracotta chimneypots. Looking down the street, you can see almost to Île Saint-Louis, and it's a quick walk to the river for a picnic dinner. And don't let the fear of outside noise keep you from booking a street-facing room; the windows are double-glazed and impressively sound proof.

While you could have your breakfast in the dining room downstairs, wouldn't you rather take it in your room? Anytime you like between 7:30am and noon (très civilized, non?) a beautiful tray can be delivered to your door. It's a generous serving of fresh croissants, yogurt, and a boiled egg, along with butter, jams, and delicious coffee or tea. We ordered an extra egg and an extra coffee, and it was more than enough for two.
